Studies in the neurosciences and molecular biology have given us many ideas that challenge the most common and widespread company myths and they have also given us techniques that have permitted us to use our brains more effectively, whether we are thinking creatively to develop an innovation or we are trying to change personnel or the organization.
Creativity and the unfocused state of the brain. To remain focused is a must in organizations that want to be agile and innovative. In reality our brain functions differently. It is precisely when it is not focused that those circuits in our brains called Default Mode Network (DMN) are activated.
The DMN mode allows the brain’s conscious radar to access past memories, to move rapidly between past, present and future and recombine different ideas. In this way, one can arrive at creative and predictive solutions for the future. Scientists suggest many ways to consciously activate this mode while at the workplace.
One of these is PCD, Positive Constructive Daydreaming, another is the construction of organizational situations in which Serendipity will take place, another is the practice of Mindfulness, that can be taught to either individuals or teams.
Optimizing emotions for performance and better decisions
The practice of emotive intelligence is based on our knowledge of the mental and chemical functions of our emotions that originate from alterations of the molecules of the hormones that connect up with our neurons.
Understanding the dynamics and recognizing the course of our emotions allows thought to interact with the emotive states and allows us to be led by an effective emotion or to modify an ineffective or potentially dangerous emotive state.
Simple exercises and daily practice allow managers and teams to break the cycle of negative emotive reactions using the breakthrough mode that makes us experience different visions and meanings.
Navigating emotions is a new competence that allows managers to improve their awareness and give more energy to their intentions creating results among their people and the clients and management of the company.
The shared neural circuit of sociality
The discovery of mirror neurons and other mechanisms to stimulate the brain has allowed us to anchor and better understand human characteristics like we understand others, our sense of collective identity, reciprocal influence or leadership.
These are phenomena found in a company that will determine the capacity of its culture to become a bonding agent so that the different people and roles, as well as managers and teams, can feel the empathy that will allow them to understand each other, clarify motivation and share objectives.
The mechanism of implicit stimulation according to which our brain acts also helps us better understand how language and communication are actions that determine real changes in others and in a shared situation.
The language and ways of communicating that team leaders and managers use to explain vision and strategy, to instill energy and to guide their people toward a company objective have a greater or lesser transformative strength depending on the empathetic energy used.
Self-awareness, learning experiences, exercises and simple practices in which we are guided by a mentor can create unexpected results in our neural plasticity.
